Working With Financial Planners and Advisers

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been working on a series of articles about working with financial planners and advisers. The information about this aspect of the financial industry can be confusing, considering the variety of certifications, similar-sounding services, and hidden agendas. The first thing to consider is whether to work with a financial planner at all. For some, it’s a matter of convenience, for others it’s a desire to trust a professional who dedicates their life or livelihood to learning about handling finances. Once you decide to seek a professional’s assistance, breaking through the myths and finding the right partner is essential.

Part 1. Whom do you trust?

Financial planners, financial advisers, investment advisers, and asset managers all have different responsibilities, different backgrounds, and different foci. I have never worked with a financial planner. Maybe if we had extra money to do so we would consider it, but I am not completely sure. With all the books, websites & talk shows on how to spend your money the ‘best’ way, I am not sold on the idea of paying someone else to tell me to do so. Sounds like an interesting job though. I really wonder what qualifies someone else to tell you how to spend your money. I guess it is all perspective.

for me one of the biggest issues if I dealt with a financial advisor is trust. I don’t trust anyone other than myself with money.

After a dismal experience with a Financial Planner (aka comission salesperson) who stuck me with some terrible investments, I found someone who really helped me. This guy has 25 years of investment experience, a solid track record and no conflicts of interest. Best of all, he works for free and is 100% dedicated to my account. I see him every morning in the mirror.

Seriously, going it alone isn’t for everyone. Even after 25 years, I often wonder if I am doing the right things. And, it takes a lot of time and energy to become knowledgeable about investing. But, there is no substitute for knowing what is going on with your money. Whether you hire an advisor or not, you are the only one who should be in control of your financial future.

I’m a financial adviser for a company that provides unbiased investment recommendations for employer-sponsored retirement plans. An adviser or advice provider who charges a flat fee (like we do), or is classified as fee-only, will be primarily concerned with giving you advice for your personal situation, without worrying about which product or investment choice will pay them the most.
